Landsknecht Halberd Fighting
For the past three weeks, I've been running some classes on halberd and at the end of each class I did some sparring with my students in light armour. We learned some interesting things about fighting with halberds in a skirmishing context and we had some absolutely epic exchanges. Bonus: you can see the progression from week to week in the sparring bouts. :D

HEMA Longsword Sparring (toning it down just a notch)
Просмотров 3,1 тыс.Месяц назад
Hello everyone! Here's another sparring video that I really wanted to get out there. First off, Imke was really showing off her skills here, and secondly we both are fencers that don't deal well with pressure and expectations. Simply just saying we would keep it somewhat less intense at the beginning, led to some really cool exchanges, which I'm quite happy to be able to share with you. :D If y...

The Proto-Katzbalger. What is this sword and how do you use it?
First off, I’m amazed at your skill. This clearly took a ton of effort and work to be able to do, and that effort shows in how fluid your movement are. Secondly, as we can see, shockingly, armor was made to be worn by humans. It thus is made to allow for human movement. Not sure why game/movie/book writers can’t seem to see that.
Doppelhänder meets Janissary skull.
Most insane way to fight
Where do you get that greatsword from
Would you think having a training spear head ok the other end to allow for the full use of both ends would be beneficial? Or are those types of techniques not really that useful?
Honestly, I haven't gotten into situations where I'd feel like thrusting with the other end all that much, and when it did occur it was always at distances or times where the flexible head wouldn't have made an awfully big difference in impact.
Could I ask you something? In moments like 5:01 we see the 2 combatants closing on each other and getting their halberds locked together. Wouldn't it be more beneficial to grab the halberd closer to the pointy end since it will give them more strength on the lock and more control over the tip of their weapons?
You know that's basically on par what I expected to happen.
That was stupidly funny!
Хрень полная, никто не будет ждать пока ты там с мечем крутишься, тебе сделают подсечку или ударят обратным концом. У меча нет шанса против копья.
The medieval combat equivalent of "smoke em if you got em"
Out numbered = Dead Forget the movies, forget the anime. A group of farmers could easily kill a knight with some daggers and pitch forks.
Lmao no. The knight would kill a lot of them then the rest would run away in fear of their lives. Just say you are incapable
Do you think the lightness of the halberd heads (I'm assuming rubber is lighter than steel) effects the balance of cuts vs thrusts in your sparring? The last time I picked up a halberd at a reenactment I was a little taken aback by how heavy it was and I remember thinking that if I used it in a fight I'd probably want to do 80% thrusts and only use the edge in special circumstances. (This is in no way a criticism of what you're doing; it looks awesome and I know Meyer et al do include plenty of big sweeping cuts in their halberd sections.)
I think the effect is rather minimal. My steel one is significantly heavier, but I feel that making cuts is still quite doable with that steel one if you hold it in the halfway grip. A big thing that makes it work for me, is that just like with almost every other weapon, cut with the expectation of hitting something (halberd or person). Meeting resistance should allow you to continue into a thrust from a cut. It would be a bit slower with steel, but the truly big difference would be in safety. These rubber headed halberds are quite forward weighted already, but still quite light, so you can control them on a cut. There's absolutely no way I feel I'd be able to stop my steel halberd when I cut with it.
Not when they’re made of foam
I think you may have missed a rather crucial part of the video.
А если мой противник будет сопротивляться?
Your attackers don't seem too aggressive 😑
Smart people generally don't want to risk taking a really big sword to the face.
@@VirtualFechtschule sometimes they also just don't want to upset their instructors.
@@loganfields159 Whenever I make a mistake, they will definitely hit me. Whenever they're doing their reps with the greatsword, they'll kick my ass, so I don't think that that's the problem here. People who actually practice are quickly disabused of the idea that you can somehow block a greatsword, or be super aggressive against one and get away with it.
Great example and explanation! If your opponent has both more reach and power you need to find other ways to reach him/her so for example the group needs to coordinate their attacks in order to surpass it's defences but that type of coordination is not easy to achieve and requires lots of training.
🗿👍
For me it was the Lucerene Polehammer.
Дефолтный крестьянин с копьем
Parry this you filthy casual
What if you attack near the handguard to parry it though, because momentum and leverage being reduced by doing so, you be wearing armour in RL so you could do that no?
Hi, nice video. What halberts exactly are you using? Could you recommend them?
Now Dragonslayer!
You should do breastplates and katzbalgers next! (Or a messer or something since I doubt everyone has a katzbalger trainer)
Sounds like a fun idea. I'm still thinking how to simulate being in a melee with that, without actually being in a melee (because you need a lot of people and your setup time for each exchange is quite long).
Remind me of Arya vs Briene sh*t 😂

Quite simply, if you’re outnumbered 5 to 1 and still talking about “conserving your energy”, what exactly are you saving your energy for?
This guy is objectively cool
Shield + pike like Spartan its better.
А вертеться обязательно или можно просто по бырому пырнуть?
where do you get your half plate?
People forget there's a thing called conditioning too, they assume because they're too fat and lazy to achieve something in their current condition, that you are just as bad lol
Hema and miniatures ,how geeky,I myself take part in manly things like MMA (very manly shaving your mate's bikini line )and watching football(watching young men in shorts run about )😊great vid ,more and more convinced that the sword is a poor weapon in mass combat😊
The sword is an excellent back-up weapon as it´s easy to carry alongside other equipment.
Imagine being in a pike block, walking into another pike block 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
I'm curious about the sources and their context. Can we assume this is representative of military style techniques? How would they change or be affected by denser formations of fighters or multiple enemies/allies? Of course the scenario displayed is 1v1 but i'm curious about if there is anything in regards to the use of the weapon with more restricted range of motion due to space confinements of a battlefield or other obstructions such as walls or doorways
Herrlich.
Can you make videos talking more about the variation of halberd types in RUclips and Instagram plis ? It will help a lot of new historical fencing fighters to now more about the weapons who they will fight
The halberds are pretty good fight weapons
Very beautiful
Some of the cleanest hema fencing i've seen. Beautiful!
Thank you!
Hi Oskar, gear question. Do you find the Cobra mask to be a decent compromise when fencing in half armour? I have a sallet and bevor for my half armour set up and separately the Cobra mask for fencing. I am a bit hesitant of playing with the sallet as it still has its openings and I don't want to go full speed with it.
I am quite happy with the Cobra as a compromise. For living history I'll be happy with my helmet, but for intensity I feel a lot safer in the mask and the cobra has the added benefit of having a pretty clear distinction between hardshell part and mesh, so it's clear to me what is 'helmet' and what is open.
@@VirtualFechtschule Thank you for your response. I will perhaps do as you, work slower and technical stuff and experimental technical stuff with the sallet, but go with the mask for the high intensity variation. I have not considered the idea of having the mesh play the "open" part of a helmet and it's an interesting one. Thank you.

So it’s a no
Some really nice actions from all players, although personally I would avoid getting the heads entangled. In those cases strenght tends to become the dominant factor, and there is always going to be somebody stronger.
Yeah, getting entangled really sucks. I try to avoid it as well if possible.
On shortening the grip: I often do it in group fights, and I'm using a 1300 AD spear, I imagine it would be indispensable with halberds. If I'm dueling a spearman, then I can get away with having my full reach, but when I have to defend several spear pokes to the flanks of my meat shields (i.e. people in the shieldwall I hide behind)? Being quicker on the defense is more important because if the shieldwall falls, I'm next on the menu. The other spearman can also just be really fast, maybe because he has a smaller spearhead or maybe because he works out more, so you need to make not getting stabbed a priority until one of your mates can help you dogpile him.
I usually the same thing (protecting friendlies from enemy spears/halbeards) if there are more of them on the opposing side. I don't shorten the grip, this allows to mess with enemy weapons while they are still in idle position, that's easier than catching their stabs
Dude… helbard fighting AND historical Wargaming? You won the internet for today
